The Global Shopping Calendar 2026: Every Sale That Matters, Ranked

Prime Day, Black Friday, Singles Day, Diwali, Boxing Day, Chinese New Year, Ramadan. A practical ranking of every major bargain event — when to buy, what to skip, which ones are actually genuine.

Not all sales are created equal

Retail marketing wants you to believe every shopping event is the biggest deal of the year. In reality, there's a clear hierarchy. Some events deliver real, across-the-board discounts. Others are theatre — inflated was-prices and recycled offers dressed up in new packaging.

This is our honest ranking of every major global shopping event, what actually gets discounted, and which ones to skip.

Tier 1: The ones that matter

Amazon Prime Day (July, plus a second event in October)

When: Usually mid-July, with a second "Prime Big Deal Days" event in October. Where: All 15 Amazon regional stores. Who needs it: Prime members only (but the 30-day free trial is enough).

Prime Day is Amazon's biggest members-only sale of the year. The deepest discounts are on Amazon's own-brand devices: Echo, Kindle, Fire TV, Ring doorbells. If you've been eyeing an Echo, wait for Prime Day — the discounts regularly hit 40-50% off.

Outside Amazon's own brands, the best Prime Day deals cluster in household consumables, tech accessories, and mid-tier consumer electronics. High-end items (premium headphones, TVs, laptops) often get smaller discounts because the brands resist Amazon's pricing pressure.

Our tip: Start the Amazon Prime free trial the week before so you qualify. Cancel right after if you don't want to keep it.

Black Friday / Cyber Monday (Last Friday of November)

When: Friday after US Thanksgiving, through the Monday after. Where: Global. Strongest in US, UK, Germany, Canada, Australia. Who needs it: Anyone buying tech, clothing, or homeware.

Black Friday is still the biggest shopping event on Earth, and it's evolved into a month-long event — most retailers now start "early Black Friday" deals from November 1st. The quality of deals varies enormously by category:

  • Tech (TVs, laptops, consoles): Real. Genuinely the best time of year in most regions.
  • Fashion: Mixed. Many "Black Friday" prices are identical to October's end-of-season clearance.
  • Toys and Christmas gifts: Real, but stock runs out. Buy early November, not the day itself.
  • Luxury goods: Mostly theatre. Luxury brands rarely participate genuinely.

Our tip: Don't shop Black Friday itself if you can avoid it. Early November and Cyber Monday usually have better prices with less frenzy.

Singles' Day (November 11)

When: November 11, every year. Where: Originating in China, now global. Who needs it: Anyone buying from AliExpress, Shopee, Lazada, or Taobao.

Singles' Day is the single biggest shopping day in history. Alibaba invented it, and it now moves more gross merchandise in 24 hours than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. For Western bargain hunters, Singles' Day is the best time of year to buy anything from AliExpress, Temu, or SHEIN.

Shipping from China is slower through November (warehouses are overwhelmed), so if you're ordering from China, factor in 2-3 extra weeks.

Our tip: Many Western retailers now participate — especially beauty brands and some electronics. Worth checking on November 10-12.

Boxing Day Sales (December 26 - January 2)

When: December 26 onwards. Where: UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand. Who needs it: Post-Christmas clearance hunters.

Boxing Day is the traditional post-Christmas clearance event across the Commonwealth. UK retailers (John Lewis, Selfridges, House of Fraser, Currys) use it to clear out Q4 inventory. The deepest discounts are on:

  • End-of-season fashion (winter coats at 40-60% off)
  • Christmas decor and gift wrap (for next year — 70-90% off)
  • Home appliances not sold during the holiday rush
  • Leftover Christmas chocolate and food gifts (underrated)

Our tip: Boxing Day Sales extend through early January in most UK retailers. The first week of January often has better fashion deals than Boxing Day itself as retailers slash prices further.

Tier 2: The regional giants

Diwali Sales (October-November)

Where: India, plus the global Indian diaspora. Who needs it: Anyone buying Indian fashion, Ayurvedic beauty, electronics from Amazon.in or Flipkart.

Diwali is India's largest shopping event. Amazon.in runs its "Great Indian Festival" and Flipkart runs "Big Billion Days" — both span 10-15 days in October-November. The discounts on electronics are aggressive, and no-cost EMI (interest-free instalments) stack on top.

Many Western Indian fashion and jewellery brands now extend Diwali promotions to their US/UK sites.

Chinese New Year Clearance (Late January to February)

Where: China, SE Asia, Chinatowns worldwide. Who needs it: AliExpress and Shopee shoppers.

Post-CNY is when Chinese factories clear pre-holiday inventory. AliExpress, Shopee, and Taobao all drop prices as sellers restart operations. One catch: shipping pauses during the holiday itself (usually 1-2 weeks in late January or early February). Order 2 weeks before CNY or wait 2 weeks after.

Ramadan / Eid Sales (Varies yearly — lunar calendar)

Where: Middle East, North Africa, Muslim-majority markets. Who needs it: Shoppers in MENA, or anyone buying from Noon, Amazon.ae, Namshi, 6thStreet.

Ramadan and the pre-Eid shopping rush are the biggest retail events across MENA. Heavy discounts on fashion, home goods, cosmetics, and gold jewellery. Many Western brands run Ramadan promotions on their regional sites.

Back to School (Late July through September)

Where: Global, but major in US, UK, Germany, Japan. Who needs it: Anyone buying laptops, office software, stationery, dorm essentials.

Back to School is underrated as a tech event. Apple runs an annual promo that includes a free accessory (AirPods, Apple Pencil, etc.) on Mac and iPad purchases through mid-October. Microsoft Office / 365 discount heavily. Laptop prices hit lows on mid-range models.

Tier 3: Worth watching but don't plan around

  • Amazon Big Spring Sale (late March) — similar to Prime Day but open to non-members. Real discounts but narrower category range.
  • US Memorial Day (last Monday of May) — mainly outdoor gear, furniture, grills, luggage.
  • US Labor Day (first Monday of September) — mattresses and appliances. If you need a new mattress in North America, Labor Day beats Black Friday.
  • Valentine's Day Clearance (February 15-28) — everything red or chocolate-coated at 50-80% off.
  • EU Summer Sales (Soldes/Saldi/Rebajas, June-July) — legally regulated clearance in France, Italy, Spain. Best for luxury European fashion.

Tier 4: The ones to ignore

Some "sales events" are pure marketing with no meaningful discounts. Retailers use them to generate urgency on normal-priced items. These are the ones we skip:

  • Amazon Vintage Deal Days — mostly random leftovers at ordinary prices.
  • "Mid-year sales" (non-EU) — usually nothing special unless they coincide with Back to School.
  • Mother's Day / Father's Day sales — discount theatre. Same prices available in any average week.
  • "Tax free weekends" (US regional) — actually decent for large purchases but only in some states and only on specific categories. Check your state's rules before planning.

The meta-rule

The best time to buy anything is when that specific product drops, not when the calendar says there's a sale. Set price alerts in Keepa, Google Shopping, or CamelCamelCamel for the items you actually want. You'll hit more genuine lows that way than by shopping the big events blindly.

But if you're going to shop one event per year, make it Prime Day in your region + Amazon Prime Big Deal Days in October. Those two days genuinely beat the rest of the year on the widest range of products.
