How to Spot a Fake Sale: The 5 Tricks Retailers Use to Pretend Something Is a Bargain
Most 'sales' aren't. Here's the dark-pattern playbook retailers use to make normal prices look like steals — and the 5 checks that tell you if a discount is real.
Most sales aren't sales. They're theatre.
The core trick of retail marketing is to make a price feel like a discount even when it isn't. It works because our brains anchor to the first number we see. If a tag says "WAS $99, NOW $49," we feel $49 is cheap even if the product never sold for $99 in the real world.
Here are the five most common tricks and how to beat each one in under a minute.
Trick 1: The inflated "list price"
The "was price" or "list price" on a product is almost never enforced. Many retailers set the list price to the highest number the manufacturer has ever suggested, regardless of whether the item actually sold at that price. The item might have been available for $49 for years; the $99 "was" is there purely to generate a 50% discount badge.
How to beat it: Use a price history tool. For Amazon, install Keepa or CamelCamelCamel — they chart every price change an item has ever had. If the "was" price never appears on the chart, it never existed.
Trick 2: The pre-sale price hike
Retailers raise prices 2-4 weeks before a "sale" so that the sale price is higher than the normal price. A product that sold for £40 in September gets bumped to £60 in early November, then gets "discounted" to £45 on Black Friday. The discount looks like £15. The real deal is £5 worse than September.
How to beat it: Check the price at least a month before the announced sale. For Black Friday specifically, screenshot the October price of anything you're planning to buy. Compare on the day.
Trick 3: The confusing bundle
"Buy 2, get 30% off the second" sounds great until you realize you didn't need two. The retailer earns the same total margin; you spend 70% more to save "30%." Retailers love bundles because they redefine what a saving means.
How to beat it: Calculate the per-unit price after the bundle. If you genuinely need two, the bundle is fine. If you're buying a second one only because of the offer, you're paying the retailer to trick you.
Trick 4: The fake countdown timer
"ONLY 3 LEFT AT THIS PRICE" and "OFFER ENDS IN 47:22" are almost always lies. The countdown resets when you reload. The "3 left" number never goes down. These are pure urgency generators designed to stop you from comparison-shopping.
How to beat it: Open an incognito tab and reload. If the timer resets or the stock count goes back up, ignore both. Real stock scarcity exists (especially for limited-release products) but fake urgency is the default.
Trick 5: The "free trial that charges your card"
Not technically a sale trick but the same category. "Free 30-day trial — just pay shipping!" almost always comes with an auto-enrollment into a monthly subscription that's hard to cancel. The "shipping fee" captures your card; the recurring charge starts on day 31.
How to beat it: Before starting any free trial, read the cancellation instructions and decide whether you're willing to set a calendar reminder. If the cancellation is buried or requires phone calls, skip it. Legitimate free trials (Amazon Prime, most SaaS products, Apple services) make cancellation trivial — one click in account settings.
The 60-second discount check
Before buying anything on sale, run this check. It takes less than a minute and catches 90% of fake deals:
- Check the price history. Use Keepa, CamelCamelCamel, or similar. Is today's price genuinely at or near the historic low?
- Check a second retailer. Is the "discounted" price actually the cheapest available? Google Shopping takes 15 seconds.
- Ignore the badge text. "50% OFF" means nothing. The raw price and how it compares to normal is all that matters.
- Reload in incognito. Does the urgency disappear? Is the countdown fake?
- Ask yourself: would I buy this at today's price if there was no sale banner? If no, the discount is doing the selling, not the product.
The meta-rule
Retailers spend billions on psychological pricing. You don't need to beat them at their own game — you just need to ignore the banners and judge the raw price. A $40 shirt at $40 is sometimes a great deal. A $99 shirt marked down to $40 is exactly the same shirt at exactly the same price.
