Kindle Paperwhite vs Basic Kindle: Which One Should You Buy?

The Kindle Paperwhite costs $50 more than the basic Kindle. Here's whether the upgrade is worth it — plus where to get each model at its lowest price.

Two Kindles, very different value propositions

Amazon sells two mainstream Kindles: the basic Kindle (11th Gen, $99) and the Kindle Paperwhite (11th Gen, $149). Both read books. The $50 difference buys you four things that matter and several that don't.

What the $50 upgrade gets you

1. Larger screen (6.8" vs 6")

The Paperwhite's screen is meaningfully larger. The 0.8-inch difference sounds small but it translates to fewer page turns, more text per page, and a reading experience closer to a physical paperback. If you read for more than 30 minutes at a stretch, you'll notice and appreciate the difference.

2. Warm light adjustment

The basic Kindle has a front light that goes from dim to bright. The Paperwhite adds adjustable warm light (blue to amber tone). This matters for night reading — the warm amber tone is dramatically easier on your eyes at 11pm than the cool blue-white of the basic model. If you read before bed, this feature alone justifies the upgrade.

3. Flush-front design

The Paperwhite's screen sits flush with the bezel. The basic Kindle has a recessed screen with a visible border. Purely aesthetic, but the Paperwhite looks and feels more premium.

4. Better battery

The Paperwhite claims 10 weeks vs the basic Kindle's 6 weeks. In practice, both last "a really long time" — you'll charge them monthly at most. The battery difference isn't a meaningful buying factor.

What the $50 does NOT get you

  • Resolution is the same: both are 300 PPI. Text is equally sharp on both.
  • Storage is the same: both start at 16GB, which holds thousands of books.
  • Bluetooth audiobook support: both have it.
  • USB-C charging: both have it (finally, after years of micro-USB).
  • Waterproofing: the Paperwhite is IPX8 (submersible), the basic Kindle is not. Matters if you read in the bath or at the pool.

The verdict

If you read before bed: buy the Paperwhite. The warm light alone is worth $50.

If you read mostly during the day, don't care about screen size, and want the cheapest possible e-reader: buy the basic Kindle.

If you're buying as a gift and don't know the recipient's habits: buy the Paperwhite. It's the safer choice.

Current best prices

Both models go on sale during the same events as other Amazon devices (Prime Day, Black Friday, random flash sales).

  • Basic Kindle: MSRP $99, sale price $74-84
  • Kindle Paperwhite: MSRP $149, sale price $94-109

The Paperwhite's sale price ($99) is often equal to the basic Kindle's full price ($99). If there's any sale running, the Paperwhite is almost always the better buy.
